Read the safety section first. Everything else here is the ordinary paperwork of using unfinished software. The safety section is the part that can actually hurt you.
1. Safety
Riding a motorcycle is dangerous. 6signals does not make it less so, and using it does not make a group ride safe.
- Do not operate the phone while the motorcycle is moving. The app is designed to be glanced at, not used. Pressing a signal key is a thing to do at a stop or from a mount you can reach without taking your eyes off the road for more than a moment — and if that sentence sounds like a judgement call, make it in favour of not touching the phone.
- Do not navigate by it. It shows where the riders in your group are. It is not a navigation system, it does not know the road, and it does not know what is around the bend.
- Positions can be wrong, late, or missing. GPS drifts, mobile coverage disappears, phones overheat and batteries die. A rider who has stopped moving on the map has not necessarily stopped moving, and a rider who has vanished from the map has not necessarily come off. Verify with your eyes or a phone call before acting on what the screen shows.
- SOS is not an emergency service. Pressing it tells the other riders in your ride. It does not call an ambulance, does not reach the police, and is not monitored by anyone. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
- Obey the traffic law where you are riding, including whatever it says about phone mounts and screens in your field of view.
2. This is beta software
The app is in public beta. It may lose data, drop messages, show the wrong thing, drain your battery, or stop working entirely. Features described on this website may change or be abandoned. There is no service level, no uptime commitment and no support obligation, and the whole thing may be discontinued at any time without notice.
3. Your account and your rides
An anonymous account is created for you on first launch — see the privacy policy for what that involves. You are responsible for what you send through the app, including the display name you choose, which every rider in your ride can see.
A join code lets anyone who has it join that ride and see the live positions of everyone on it. Share codes only with people you intend to ride with.
4. Acceptable use
Do not:
- use the app to track, follow or locate a person who has not chosen to ride with you;
- impersonate another rider, or use a display name intended to deceive the group;
- send false SOS or hazard signals, which cost the group attention at exactly the moment attention matters;
- attack, overload or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the services behind the app, or use them for anything unlawful.
Access may be withdrawn for any of the above. Given the anonymous accounts, that is a blunt instrument, and it will be used bluntly.
5. No warranty
The app and this website are provided as is and as available, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement.
6. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the maintainer of this project is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, arising out of your use of the app or this website.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that the law does not permit to be limited — and if you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything in this document.
7. The source code, the site and the name
The source code lives in a private repository; it is not published and there is no public read access. All rights in it are reserved. The text and design of this website are likewise reserved, with the exception of the typefaces, which are third-party fonts under the SIL Open Font License and the Apache License 2.0 and whose licence texts ship alongside them in /fonts/.
8. Changes to these terms
Material changes will move the version and date at the top of this page. Continuing to use the app after a change means the new version applies.
